David Leslie Dickens, 73, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, August 27, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

David, a native of Halifax County, was the son of the late Leslie David and Lydia Daniels Dickens. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Pat Abshire and Dr. Joyce Dickens.

David was retired from Dominion Power after 42 years of service. He loved to hunt, fish and was a grill master.

He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Dickens and her wife, Cheryl, and Leslie Jenkins, both of Roanoke Rapids; his granddaughter, Holly Jenkins and his grandson, Bryson Jenkins, both of Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Judy Stanley of Roanoke Rapids, Betty Bishop and her husband, Dickie, of Pineville, LA; his brother, Frank Dickens and Cathy of New Bern; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Charles Allen and George Denning; and his faithful canine companions, Missy and Mattie.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 30 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and other times at his daughter Melissa's home at 286 Updcreek Road, Roanoke Rapids.
